Coal Facility and Mine Locations

The coal industry in Wyoming

Wyoming's current coal industry can be found in 9 of the state's 23 counties. Wyoming is home to 18 active coal mines operated by ten different companies, seven different coal fired power plants, four coal processing facilities, and coalbed methane activity. The combined coal production for Wyoming in 2007 set another state record in coal production of 453 million tons.

One pound of Wyoming coal has a heating capacity of approximately 8500 Btus (British thermal units.) Wyoming's coal is subbituminous C, (8300 to 9500 Btu) in rank and favored by its clean burning characteristics. Today coal is used to produce nearly 50% of the nation's electrical power, 35% of that demand is supported by Wyoming coal. Below are two maps that highlight Wyoming's coal industry, just click on a map to view in the multi-resolution MrSid format.
