About Us

The Coal Section is a major source for information on Wyoming's coal resources and the various industries that mine and utilize the coal reserves of the State. Wyoming coal miners lead the nation in coal production. In 2007, the State's mines produced (an annual record) just over 451 million short tons of coal. 96% of this coal was burned in 28 states, for the generation of electrical power. Industrial and commercial users consumed the remaining coal, with a small amount burned for domestic uses.

Wyoming coal is currently produced in four of the State's ten major coal fields. Production from the Powder River Coal Field is the most prolific in the world; in 2007 the field produced just over 436 million short tons. Coal also was mined from the Hams Fork, Green River and Hanna coal fields.

The Wyoming State Geological Survey maintains extensive files of drilling and coal quality information on the coals of the state, much of which is available to visitors to the survey. The Wyoming survey also is a repository of numerous USGS open file reports covering their work on the potentially minable coal throughout the state.

The Coal Section welcomes all inquiries concerning this very important state resource.
