Economic Geology

Modern society has come to expect a standard of living based on a host of naturally occurring minerals and their derived products. Finding and developing mineral deposits is a very important activity to the economic stability of Wyoming. The State’s number one source of income derives from industries dealing with the various aspects of mineral production. The principal raw materials that are found in Wyoming and their geological occurrence are described below. Table 1 shows development of some of the State’s major mineral deposits through geologic time.
