Yellowstone Geologic GIS Database
Project Information
With funding from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 2010, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) created the Yellowstone Geologic GIS Database to provide geologic information and updates of recent geologic activity in Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone volcanic province is the most significant geologic hazard in Wyoming: volcanic activity in the Yellowstone area has the potential to catastrophically affect Wyoming, the western United States, and the northern hemisphere.
Database features information on the surficial and bedrock geology of Yellowstone, as well as park roads, trails, visitor center locations, photos, and web cams. Figures and plots of dynamic hazardous conditions of Yellowstone were provided by the staff of the USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) and the WSGS. The database can be explored online using the Interactive Web Map of Yellowstone Geology and is also available for download at the Yellowstone Geologic GIS Data Center.
The Yellowstone Geologic GIS Database provides a useful service for geologists and GIS professionals interested in the Yellowstone area. The general public will find the site useful for educational, recreational, and research purposes.
Additional publications about Yellowstone geology can be found through the USGS Publications Warehouse. Photographs from Yellowstone can be found on the National Park Service or USGS website.
