This coverage contains boundaries for
hydrogeothermal areas within Yellowstone National
Park (YNP). The original 1996 coverage, "Thermal
Areas of Yellowstone National Park, WY", was used
as a base for this coverage. Using one-meter
DOQQs, field observations, historical data, and
data from the Thermal Inventory Project the
original boundaries were refined, sub-divided and
the coverage was attributed. Attributes include
general park location, basin or area division and
names, group and/or complex division and names,
division of areas based on pH grouping of
inventoried thermal features within thermal areas.
The coverage was created for use by park personnel
for resource monitoring and protection.

The 1996 coverage, "Thermal Areas of Yellowstone
National Park, WY," was used as an information
source for the coverage. Boundary placement in
this coverage was heads-up digitized using
one-meter DOQQs. The boundaries were determined by
one or more of the following methods: outlines of
areas identified as thermal areas on one-meter
DOQQs, field observation in which boundaries were
walked and compared to their appearance on the
parks one-meter DOQQs, boundaries which extend
past their appearance on DOQQ were set or
determined by the location of geothermal features
as located in the Thermal Inventory Project or
based on knowledge of selected members of GOSA
(Geyser Observation and Study Association) and
park personnel. Quality control was done in the
Spatial Analysis Center.

Errors may exist in the location of the
boundaries. The boundaries were set based on
visual observations of the lack of or sparseness
of vegetation in and around hydrogeothermal
features and not on a quantitative method; that is
neither soil type nor ground temperature were
considered. Thermal areas and/or basins are in a
constant state of change which can lead to errors
in the coverage as thermal area boundaries can
grow a meter or more in a month's time. Basins and
thermal areas may be divided into groups or
complexes. The division of a basin into groups or
complexes is not based on a linear distance or
size but is based on the grouping of geysers,
springs, and or pools. This grouping may be based
on the interrelationship of geyser activity
between other geysers and or pools or springs, on
the similarity of the chemical make up of thermal
waters, on historical groupings which may have
been based on the proximity of springs or pools to
a well known geyser, or other interrelationships
which do not exist today. This division of the
basin or thermal area into groups or complexes and
the naming of groups and complexes are therefore
subjective. Historically some groups, complexes,
and basins have multiple divisions and multiple
names. Concerned groups and individuals may hold
differing opinions. NPS division of Cultural
Resources (archivist/historian) and Spatial
Analysis Center did quality control. Group
divisions, group names, names, and name forms were
checked against any and all relevant historical
records and personal knowledge of park personal
and GOSA members. Therefore the spatial location
of the division lines of basins or thermal areas
into groups is to be considered accurate and
correct, because the division is based on the
inclusion of thermal features into the groups and
not on a spatial size or location. Specific known
errors in the coverage are as follows: Joseph's
Coat Springs: The thermal area labeled Joseph's
Coat Springs is actually Orange Rock Springs. An
error in map production by the USGS and teh USBGN,
circa 1930, named the area on the left bank of
Broad Creek as Joseph's Coat Springs and placed
the name Orange Rock Springs on a small group of
seeps at 2.7km WSW. The extent of the incorrectly
named Joseph's Coat Springs includes the thermal
features on both bands of Broad Creek and not just
the left or east bank of the creek. The name
Joseph's Coat Spring is used in this coverage due
to the extent to which the name is entrenched and
the number of works that use the name. Orange Rock
Springs: The area labeled Orange Rock Springs on
USGS 7.5 minute maps is not used in this coverage.
The name is the correct name for Joseph's Coat
Springs. Instead the area labeled Orange Rock
Springs on the USGS 7.5 minute maps is named Not
Orange Rock Springs. A name that is becoming
entrenched in local usage. Culex Basin: The name
Culex Basin first appeared on Geology Sheet XXII
of the 1904 Hague Atlas and was a small group of
thermal features adjoining Morning Mist Springs
and the Porcupine HIlls Group in the Lower Geyser
Basin. Culex Basin, as the USGS 7.5 minute quad
map "Lower Geyser Basin, Wy." 1986. implies is not
a basin. In this coverage the name Culex Basin is
used as a group name and not as a basin or thermal
area. Also the extent as shown on this coverage
of Culex Basin reflects the extent as defined by
the USGS 7.5 minute quad map "Lower Geyser Basin,
Wy." 1986. This is known to be incorrect. This
error will be corrected when an agreement on the
NE boundary of Culex Basin is reached between
YNP's archivist/historian and concerned
individuals.

The polygon boundaries were digitized from

copy of this layer was updated in ArcView 3.2a by
relocating and redefining polygon boundary

During the summer season of 2000 ground surveys
were done in the major geyser basins, Upper,
Midway, and Lower, as well as other thermal areas
along the Upper Geyser Basin to Mammoth Hot
Springs road corridor. During the surveys boundary
outlines on printed maps were visually compared to
ground conditions and the layer information was
adjusted to reflect the observations. Printed maps
were also supplied to NPS personnel and GOSA
members who refined areas for which they were
knowledgeable and changes were made accordingly.
These changes were then made to the in-work
coverage.
