Abstract:
This digital publication contains all the geologic map information used to publish U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 729-G (Christiansen, 2001). The superlative hot springs, geysers, and fumarole fields of Yellowstone National Park are vivid reminders of a recent volcanic past. Volcanism on an immense scale largely shaped the unique landscape of central and western Yellowstone Park, and intimately related tectonism and seismicity continue even now. Furthermore, the volcanism that gave rise to Yellowstone's hydrothermal displays was only part of a long history of late Cenozoic eruptions in southern and eastern Idaho, northwestern Wyoming, and southwestern Montana. The late Cenozoic volcanism of Yellowstone National Park, although long believed to have occurred in late Tertiary time, is now known to have been of latest Pliocene and Pleistocene age. The eruptions formed a complex plateau of voluminous rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs and lavas, but basaltic lavas too have erupted intermittently around the margins of the rhyolite plateau. Volcanism almost certainly will recur in the Yellowstone National Park region.
Purpose:
This database was constructed in order to produce geologic maps as a basis for understanding processes and volcano hazards involved in the eruptions of the Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field.

All the geologic map information used to publish U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 729-G is contained in this digital publication. The geologic map plates in Professional Paper 729-G show the distribution and relations of volcanic units in the Yellowstone National Park region. This metadata document contains information for the entire set of ArcGIS feature classes included in this database. Where relevant information for individual feature classes differs from that of the others, each feature class is documented separately in sequence in that metadata section.

Uses of this digital geologic map should not violate the spatial resolution of the data. Although the digital form of the data removes the constraint imposed by the scale of a paper map, the detail and accuracy inherent in map scale are also present in the digital data. The fact that this database was edited for a scale of 1:50,000 means that higher resolution information is not present in the dataset. Plotting at scales larger than 1:50,000 will not yield greater detail, although it may reveal fine-scale irregularities below the intended resolution of the database. Similarly, where this database is used in combination with other data of higher resolution, the resolution of the combined output will be limited by the lower resolution of these data. Acknowlegdement of the U.S. Geological Survey would be appreciated in products derived from these data.

The report is intended to describe completely the igneous and volcanic products, volcanic vent locations, and structural features of the Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field. Geological information appropriately mapped at larger scales than those of the individual map plates has been omitted.

The general positional accuracy of each line in the database is indicated qualitatively within the LTYPE field in the attribute tables of each feature class (see Attribute_Domain_Values). Points in the database are generally well located. The position of each data item is derived from USGS 1:48,000, 1:62,500, 1:250,000, and 1:500,000-scale topographic base maps, and therefore inaccuracies encountered are within National Map Accuracy Standards at the publication scale of each map plate.
