A cyclic marine environment is responsible for the various rock types found within the formation. The Dark gray layer seen in this picture is a source rock for oil. Photo by Ryan O’Donnell. Heavily fractured Madison Limestone. Thrust faults are the cause for the nearly 90 degree tilt and wave like pattern. Photo by Ryan O’Donnell. Photo illustrates deformation and differential compaction of the precursor material to coal, a hydrophilic gel called gytta, in response to loading and rapid burial prior to thermogenic maturation of the gel into coal.
