![]() Coal Fields of the U.S. Western Coal Primarily subbituminous coal with a small amount of bituminous coal. Montana and North Dakota have huge lignite deposits. All deposits were formed during the late Cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene time periods. Eastern Coal
