The Anatomy of a Coal Forming Swamp

This is a detailed look under the surface of a coal forming swamp. On the left are the two major processes in action: Diagenesis - bacterial decay, and Metamoprhism - change through heat. On the right are the products of these processes - peat through anthracite. The white arrows on top show how impurities can get into the peat eventually forming the ash in coals.
