Wyoming Earthquake Database IMS
In 2009, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) developed a statewide earthquake database. It was created with funding assistance from the State of Wyoming Student Internship Program. An update of an existing WSGS/University of Wyoming Water Resources Data System (WRDS) earthquake database, the database is available to the public via this new Internet Mapping Service (IMS).
Downloadable data are available in text format and include date, time, latitude, longitude, magnitude or intensity, and depth information. Some events may contain incomplete data due to their date and/or source. The Wyoming Earthquake Database will be updated weekly to reflect ever-present seismic activity in Wyoming and provide current information on seismic events in Wyoming. The database contains location data only. For those interested in more complete seismic data, please refer to the appropriate data source.
WSGS would like to thank the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, USGS, EarthScope ANF, and those who worked on the WSGS 100 Years of Earthquakes in Wyoming (1871-1970) database. Without their past and present dedication to seismic monitoring and research in Wyoming, this project would not have been possible.
WSGS hopes that this database is a valuable resource to researchers, mitigation planners, and other users. - WSGS 100 Years of Earthquakes in Wyoming (1871-1970)
- Data Note: For the purpose of this IMS, the WSGS 100 Years of Earthquakes in Wyoming (1871-1970) seismic data do not contain magnitudes; rather, the data contain intensity (Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale). The earthquakes in the WSGS database are historical events for which a magnitude has not been calculated; however, intensities have been assigned to events based on regional reports of shaking associated with a specific earthquake.
- Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS) Composite Earthquake Catalog
- Data Note: The ANSS catalog compiles event information from many seismic networks; the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) operate the two main seismic networks in Wyoming. The seismic events in the ANSS catalog have been clipped using the bounding coordinates of 45.4, -111.4 and 40.6, -103.6 (Decimal Degrees). This IMS includes earthquakes outside the Wyoming border that may have been felt by residents of Wyoming.
- EarthScope’s Array Network Facility (ANF)
- Data Note: The ANF records all seismic events in Wyoming through the USArray project including mine blasts and other anthropogenic seismic events. Magnitudes have not been calculated for the ANF data, although it can be assumed that events that do not also appear on the ANSS Composite Earthquake Catalog have magnitudes less than 2.3. Like the ANSS catalog, the ANF database has been clipped to 45,.4, -111.4 and 40.6, -103.6 (Decimal Degrees).
The Wyoming Earthquake Database IMS also includes an “active faults” layer, which is derived from the USGS Quaternary Fault and Fold Database of the United States. This data layer contains fault locations that are believed to be possible earthquake sources of magnitude 6.0 and greater during the Quaternary Period (the past 1.6 million years). The Class B notation for a number of the faults in Wyoming signifies faults that have not been thoroughly studied; however, they are potentially Quaternary in age.
