A single polygon bedrock geology feature class was created from tbb_east and tbb_west.
Field mapping was completed between 1995 and 1999, and data were field checked during 2000 and 2001. Stratigraphic marker units were mapped directly on the following U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 minute series topographic maps: Reed Reservoir (1964, PR 1980), Lonetree (1964, PR 1980), Soap Holes Reservoir (1964, PR 1980), Burntfork (1964, 1980), Horse Ranch (1964, PR 1980), McKinnon (1964, 1980), Black Spring Reservoir (1964), AntelopeWash (1964, PR 1980), Devils Playground (1987), and Linwood Canyon (1987). The field mapping was verified against United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) stereographic airphotos of the project area. The field data were then digitized using ESRI Arc/Info software and compiled for the Wyoming Geological Survey (WGS) into eastern and western coverages (tbb_east and tbb_west).
The digitization process was initially undertaken by scanning the original field maps for digitization in Arc/Info in a "heads up" fashion. This method proved insufficient in terms of accuracy, inasmuch as this method tended to distort scale inconsistently throughout the maps. Transferring those field data onto mylar, scanning the mylar, and then converting those data into arcs using ArcScan also proved inadequate in much the same manner. The majority of the digitization was actually completed by sight. This proved the most accurate of all methods attempted, although it is not without certain limitations, the most significant of which is time.
Arcs created during the digitization process were attributed based on the following ITEMS (in addition to standard AAT items provided and generated by Arc/Info): layer and type. Layer refers to the marker unit represented by an arc; type refers to the exposure of the marker unit-whether exposed or inferred. Once each individual 7.5' field map had been digitized, the resulting individual coverages were merged into one of two corresponding final coverages (tbb_east and tbb_west) using the APPEND command in Arc. The MATCHCOVER command was used in Arc to copy AAT values from the original individual 7.5' coverages to the appended coverages for cases in which particular item definitions were not identical to each other and attribute values were subsequently not copied.
Bounding arcs were digitized, unsnapped nodes were snapped and arc intersections were eliminated so the final coverages could be built for polygons and topology created using the BUILD command in Arc. The item submember was added to the resulting PAT (ADDITEM); each polygon was attributed accordingly (lower, middle, and upper Bridger B, C, D, etc).
