New maps of Powder River Basin formations available

The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) announces the release of four new Open File Reports (OFRs) that map prominent geologic formations in the northern Powder River Basin, Wyoming. Structure contour and isopach maps of the Upper Cretaceous Bearpaw/Pierre Shale, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Lance Formation, and Tertiary Fort Union Formation for the northern half of the Powder River Basin were prepared using data generated from a recent WSGS project.

The maps were derived using an extensive computer database consisting primarily of subsurface well log data developed for the Interactive Geologic, Hydrologic, and Water Quality Database for the Northern Powder River Basin, Wyoming project, for which the WSGS is the lead investigator. The reports were authored by personnel from the Coal, Geologic Hazards, Geologic Mapping, and Oil and Gas Sections at the WSGS. The OFRs are titled as follows:

OFR 03-1. Structure contour and isopach maps of the Fox Hills Sandstone, northern Powder River Basin, northeastern Wyoming, by R.H. De Bruin, A.J. Ver Ploeg, R.M. Lyman, N.R. Jones, and J.C. Case, 2003.

OFR 03-2. Structure contour and isopach maps of the Lance Formation, northern Powder River Basin, northeastern Wyoming, by A.J. Ver Ploeg, R.H. De Bruin, R.M. Lyman, N.R. Jones, and J.C. Case, 2003.

OFR 03-3. Structure contour and isopach maps of the Bearpaw/Pierre Shale, northern Powder River Basin, northeastern Wyoming, by R.M. Lyman, R.H. De Bruin, A.J. Ver Ploeg, N.R. Jones, and J.C. Case, 2003.

OFR 03-4. Structure contour and isopach maps of the Fort Union Formation, northern Powder River Basin, northeastern Wyoming, by N.R. Jones, R.M. Lyman, .J. Ver Ploeg, R.H. De Bruin, and J.C. Case, 2003.

Each report is an oversize, plotted color sheet consisting of the maps (color coded to structural elevation or to thickness), a text describing the formations, a schematic cross section, a type geophysical log, and a data table derived from geophysical well logs. The maps include outcrops and surface data. Only available rolled, and shipped in a map tube.

Each report sells for $10.00, plus 6% sales tax and is available over-the-counter at the WSGS publications sales office in Laramie. Orders are also accepted by phone, fax, or Email: please include $2.25 for shipping and handling and 6% sales tax for Wyoming addresses.
