from the Office of the Wyoming State Geologist

Ron Surdam, State Geologist

January 18, 2005

New Wyoming geology maps now available

The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) has released new geologic maps of the Casper and Torrington areas in Wyoming. These are preliminary versions of maps recently compiled by the Geologic Mapping and the Industrial Minerals and Uranium Sections at the WSGS.

The WSGS solicits comments and reviews of these intermediate-scale maps from the geologic community and the public at large and invites anyone with knowledge that would improve the maps to contact the WSGS. Any new detailed mapping or interpretations would especially be welcome.

WSGS Open File Report 04-9 is entitled Preliminary geologic map of the Casper 300 x 600 Quadrangle, Natrona and Converse counties, central Wyoming, by J. Hunter, A.J. Ver Ploeg, and C.S. Boyd, and includes the 1:100,000-scale plotted color map and a 13-page text containing a Description of map units, Map symbols, References cited and sources of geologic data, and Correlation of map units.

WSGS Open File Report 04-11 is entitled Preliminary geologic map of the Torrington 300 x 600 Quadrangle, Goshen and Platte counties, Wyoming and western Nebraska, by F. McLaughlin and R.E. Harris, and includes a 1:100,000-scale plotted color map.

The maps are being released in hard copy only at this point; after the WSGS receives comments and makes and additions and corrections to the maps, final digitized versions of the maps will be produced and distributed in the summer of 2005 as hard copy and digital data on CD-ROM. Both maps were produced using funds provided in part through the U.S. Geological Survey's STATEMAP program.

Each map can be purchased over-the-counter at the WSGS office in Laramie for $10.00 each plus 6% sales tax. Mail orders please add $3.55 for shipping and 6% sales tax for Wyoming addresses.

Contact: Alan Ver Ploeg at extension 230 for the Casper Quadrangle and Ray E. Harris at extension 228 for the Torrington Quadrangle.
