The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) announces the availability of a report on water produced from coalbed natural gas (CBNG) production in Wyoming. Titled Western Resources Project Final Report—Produced groundwater associated with coalbed natural gas production in the Powder River Basin, the report is WSGS Report of Investigations 55. It contains six research papers, written by a number of experts from academia and industry, that address different aspects of produced water.

The research was sponsored by the Western Resources Project - a research consortium of CBNG producers (Apache Corp., Conoco Phillips, and Marathon), two universities (Stanford and the University of Wyoming), the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, and the Western Research Institute. The report includes two studies of surface disposal of produced water (in-channel and out-of-channel), a study of using produced water for cropland irrigation, a report on using strontium tracers in studying the fate of CBNG waters in the regional hydrologic system, a study of seismic properties of coal reservoirs related to dewatering and gas production, and a report on methods of wellbore completion methods to optimize CBNG production and minimize water production.
