September 13, 2002

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BUILDING TO BE DEDICATED

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony for the Wyoming State Geological Survey’s building in Laramie. The building is being named the Dan Miller Building in honor of the late Dr. Daniel N. Miller, Jr., former State Geologist of Wyoming.  The ceremony will be held at 5:30 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2002, preceded by an open house at the Survey starting at 5:00 PM. Dr. Miller’s widow Esther, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, will be in attendance and will participate in the dedication.

Located on the campus of the University of Wyoming (UW) between the Geology and the Engineering buildings, the building was completed in 1976.  Miller was instrumental in securing private donations and State funding to construct the building, and is responsible for the expansion of the Wyoming State Geological Survey in the early 1970s to its current level.

Dr. Miller served asWyoming State Geologist from 1969 to 1981. Even after leaving the Survey, Dr. Miller remained a strong advocate for Wyoming and its resources, and continued to be an outspoken proponent of both the science and the profession of geology. He was widely known throughout the geologic community in Wyoming and the Rocky Mountains as well as on the national level, and received many awards and honors throughout his career.

The dedication kicks off the Annual Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), which is being held in Laramie September 8-10, 2002. Nearly 500 geologists, geophysicists, and geology teachers are expected to attend the meetings being held at the Wyoming Union on the UW campus. The meeting is being hosted by the Department of Geology and Geophysics at UW, the Wyoming Geological Association, and the Wyoming State Geological Survey.
