Wyoming is coal country. The state is the nation’s top coal producer, accounting for more than 39 percent of all the coal mined in the United States. Coal is a key energy resource because it is used to produce nearly half of all the electricity used in the nation, with Wyoming producing the majority of this coal. It is the second largest source of revenue in Wyoming and contributed over $1 billion to state and local governments in 2012.
